Artist Statement
As a designer & maker, Bryony’s work celebrates eye-catching bold colour within distinctive pieces of work. Her work explores the contrast of colour and material, intriguing the viewer to touch and feel each element. The majority of her work consists of elegant, simple porcelain bodies with elements of other materials such as pewter, paper, wood and acrylic. Using intricate and detailed features of pewter and paper that can beautifully stand alone in their own right or combined with large ceramic vessel, leaving viewers captivated by her choice of materials placed together to become one piece.
Inspired by clean, neat and modern forms and shapes, Bryony produces pieces of work varying from organic to geometric shapes, using each element of other materials to enhance the larger ceramic form as well as introducing colour and texture in different areas. Pushing each of the materials to their full extent, they are sometimes deceiving to the eye with their innovative finish. Techniques such as turning and slip casting heavily influences her forms and objects. “My design concepts are contemporary and grow through experimentation with both material and technique exploration, keeping bright and contrasting colours consistent throughout.” – Bryony Applegate |
